1. The Function of Safety Cabinets

Safety cabinets are essential equipment used in laboratories, factories, and research institutions to safely store flammable, corrosive, toxic, or otherwise hazardous chemicals. Their main function is to minimize chemical risks through fire resistance, leak prevention, and corrosion protection.

Key functions include:

a. Fire Protection

Constructed with double-layer fireproof steel and insulation to delay fire spread.

b. Corrosion Resistance

Polypropylene (PP) cabinets resist acid and alkali corrosion, ideal for corrosive chemicals.

c. Leak Prevention & Ventilation

Equipped with spill containment trays and ventilation ports to remove hazardous vapors.

d. Chemical Segregation

Allows segregation of incompatible chemicals (flammables, oxidizers, acids/alkalis).

2. Proper Usage of Safety Cabinets

a. Category management:

Select the correct cabinet according to chemical properties:

Flammable liquids → Yellow fireproof cabinet

Corrosives (acids/alkalis) → White PP cabinet

Toxic or volatile reagents → Ventilated safety cabinet

b. Operational guidelines:

Check container integrity before storage.

Avoid overloading and mixing incompatible chemicals.

Keep doors closed; avoid sunlight and heat sources.

Regularly clean spills and inspect ventilation connections.

c. Safety signs and records:

Affix clear chemical hazard labels, maintain an updated inventory, and record responsible personnel for traceability.

3. Maintenance and Inspection

Inspect fire locks, seals, and vents quarterly.
Test grounding connections regularly.
Avoid high temperatures or impact damage for PP cabinets.

4. Conclusion

Safety cabinets form the cornerstone of laboratory chemical safety. Proper classification, correct use, and regular maintenance are key to ensuring a safe and healthy working environment.
